Centuries ago, Samurai, Ninja, and Oiran all lived in Edo, the place where Tokyo stands today. As any resident of Japan will tell you, the atmosphere of old Edo has long since evaporated from most of Tokyo, but don’t despair, this former capital of the Tokugawa Shoguns continues to thrive in Nikko Edo Village. Nikko Edo Village is the theme park that reproduces the customs, cultures, and society of Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1867). This is not a museum. Nikko Edo Village is an attempt to produce a faithful re-creation of everyday life in old Edo. Visitors are transformed from mere onlookers into active participants in the daily activities of Edo townsfolk.
