Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park is a railway theme park conveying the history of the Usui Railway Line. There are 30 diesel engine trains available for viewing. Kyu-Karuizawa was once a post town along the Nakasendo Route — one of two major routes that connected the former imperial capital (Kyoto) with Edo (Tokyo) during the Edo Period. Today, Kyu-Karuizawa is the main center of the Karuizawa resort area. The Ginza shopping street offers visitors a pleasant stroll and shopping experience. Try the local specialty, fruit jam, which can be found within many of the shops in multiple flavors. Located at the base of Mount Asama, Onioshidashi Park features a landscape of volcanic rocks that give it a unique and rugged appearance. It was formed by the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama. Visit a beautiful temple dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kannon, and enjoy the seasonal flowers throughout the park.
