It’s sumo, the unique Japanese national pastime that is “the sport of Emperors,” combining ancient ceremony with the tremendous power of the sumo wrestlers themselves. In this traditional 15-day tournament, the wrestler with the most wins at the end of the tournament is crowned the champion. The Sumo Tournament is a thrilling spectacle held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, the foremost sumoviewing site in all of Japan. The Fire Festival is one of Fujiyoshida’s most prized cultural possessions, and this year’s festival promises to live up to its reputation.
