The city’s symbol is the Odawara Castle overlooking the local landscape. The castle was originally built in the mid-15th century and soon fell into the hands of the Hojo Clan, one of the most powerful clans of its time. However, in 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi attacked the castle, and with the defeat of the Hojo Clan, reunited Japan. The castle has been turned into a museum, displaying relics of its time. Minaka Odawara Mall is a commercial facility with shopping and dining options. In the courtyard is the Odawara Shin Joka Machi, an Edo style recreation of an old castle town with shopping and dining options.
