Hiwatari Matsuri (Fire Walking) is the ceremony of treading over burning coals, symbolizing purification of the body and soul from evil. Priests of the Yakuoin Temple located on the top of Mt. Takao, and other believers, tread through the flames and glowing embers. It is said that flames will not harm those who step swiftly and lightly, as opposed to those who move uncertainly by lack of faith. Mt. Takao is one of the most famous and scenic spots in the Kanto Plains. From the top of the mountain, you will enjoy a spectacular view of dense forests, valleys, and surrounding mountain ranges.
